PEORIA, Ill. - Eastern Illinois dropped a closely contested match to in-state opponent Bradley as the Braves earned wins in 4-of-6 singles matches en route to a 4-3 victory over the Panthers at the Clubs at River City South Wednesday afternoon.
The Panthers built a 1-0 lead by winning 2-of-3 matches to earn the point but could not pick up the decisive singles point to land a win. No. 1 singles player Jeff Rutherford edged Milos Romic by a 6-4, 7-6 (2-0) count.
With the match knotted at 2-2, Bradley would win two of the final three singles matches. Richard Robertson won at No. 6 singles over Michael Sperry, 6-3, 6-3 while Callen Fraychineaud beat #Matyas Hilgert at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-3.
Justin Haag picked up the final point for EIU at No. 5 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Eric Nguyen. Juan Cuadrado won at No. 2 singles over Jamie Firth, 6-1, 6-0; while Brock Reiman won 6-3, 6-2 over Warren Race at No. 3
In doubles play, Eastern Illinois took 2-of-3 matches to earn the doubles point. Rutherford/Haag defeated Fraychineaud/Reiman 8-4 at the No. 1 spot, while Firth/Sperry clipped Cuadrado/Robertson 8-5 at the No. 3 spot. Bradley's lone doubles wins came at No. 2, as Romic/Nguyen beat Hilgert/Race 8-4.
