Senior Ragini Acharya and junior Lauren Sabacinski received CAA Doubles Team of the Week honors for Feb. 14, while senior Carmen Pop was named CAA Singles Player of the Week for Feb. 28.
Richmond, Va. (3/17/10) - A trio of William and Mary women’s tennis players were honored by the Colonial Athletic Association on Wednesday for their play during the month of February. Senior Ragini Acharya and junior Lauren Sabacinski earned CAA Doubles Team of the Week honors for the week of February 14, while senior Carmen Pop earned CAA Singles Player of the Week honors for her playing during the week of Feb. 28. Acharya and Sabacinski earned the weekly doubles honor after clinching the pairs point with an 8-3 win over Liset Brito and Priscilla Castillo at the No. 1 spot. It marked the fifth doubles win of the year for the Green and Gold pair as the duo helped W&M to a 6-1 upset of then-No. 27 Florida International on Feb. 13. It marks the sixth weekly award of Acharya’s career, including her third doubles honor, while Sabacinski received her second career weekly doubles award.
Pop is on a tear for the Tribe in singles play, winning her 11th straight match against ETSU on Wednesday. She is a team-best 19-7 overall and 13-1 in dual-match singles play for the Tribe. Pop earned the second CAA Singles Player of the Week honor of her career on Feb. 28 after tallying singles victories against No. 25-ranked Virginia and Wisconsin. Pop downed Jennifer Stevens of UVa, 7-6, 6-1, before clinching the W&M win over Wisconsin with a 7-6, 6-3 triumph over Jessica Seyferth at the No. 3 singles position.
W&M bounced East Tennessee State, 5-2, on Wednesday and will play host to a pair of ACC foes over the weekend. The College welcomes No. 52 Wake Forest to Williamsburg on Saturday, March 20, at noon and then faces No. 5 Duke on Sunday, March 21, at 10 a.m. The Tribe-Blue Devil match is a make-up from the tilt that was postponed due to rain in Puerto Rico last week. Both Tribe matches will be played at the Busch Tennis Court, weather permitting.
