The year-end awards continue to come in for some of the individuals on our tennis teams. It was another banner year for us as a whole. Here are some recent awards and announcement that you may not know about.

Ingrid Stensvaag received Academic All-American honors for the second consecutive season! She is now the only two-time recipient of this honor-Congrats! To see the story on this incredible achievement go to: http://www.uwwsports.com/news/2010/6/9/WTEN_0609105632.aspx?path=wten

Finally, you all know that Daniel Bickett won the Regional Assistant Women’s Coach of the Year, but you probably were not aware that his name moved on and he was name the NATIONAL Assistant Coach of the Year from the ITA at their recent year end banquet. For details on that story, go to: http://www.itatennis.com/AboutITA/News/ITA_Announces_Division_III_National_Award_Winners.htm

Grades came in for the teams and once again the teams each did very well (9 ITA scholar athletes!): Here is a summary for you:

Men: Ended up with a 3.3 GPA this semester giving them a 3.23 GPA for the year, which will make them an ITA All Academic Team for the 5th consecutive year. They had three ITA scholar-athletes (3.5 GPA or better for the year) in Hintz, Harmatys, and Halweg-congrats! Halweg and Harmatys each nailed a 4.0 this semester! 11 of our players reached the team goal of 3.2 including all four freshmen! Finally, 9 of our men improved their GPA’s this semester!

Women: Ended up with a 3.4 GPA this semester giving them a 3.5 GPA for the year, which will make them an ITA All Academic Team for the 4th consecutive year. They had six ITA scholar-athletes (3.5 GPA or better for the year) in Schaefer, Kinsman, Martin, Rutkowski, Stensvaag, and Zhao-congrats! Abby Martin, Ingrid Stensvaag, and Crystal Zhao all earned impressive 4.0’s this semester! Crystal actually has a career 4.0 after her freshman year. Ingrid got all A’s for her career here except for one pesky A- last year. 10 of our players reached the team goal of 3.2 including all four freshmen!

Keep up the great work off the court, this will be a tough act to follow!

Speaking of off the court, the team recently did some community outreach after the season ended in two arenas. First UWW hosted a PTR tennis certification course where 15 people came to campus, were trained by world renowned PTR professional staff, and obtained their PTR tennis certifications the weekend of May 22. Then in late May/early June the team held is annual two week FREE middle school program for local middle school children. It is a program intended to introduce tennis as a lifetime sport. We had 33 students and just about everyone from the team helped out by volunteering their time to teach. After school each day for those two weeks the kids were bussed over for an hour and a half of tennis. Most were beginners, but by the end of two weeks, they all knew how to play the game we all love!

Next up for the Warhawks: We will be running our famous Warhawk Tennis Camps over the summer where close to 600 junior tennis players will come to one of our five week long camps to work on their games. Better put my big floppy hat on!

We hope to see you all soon!

GO WARHAWKS!
