OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2010) – NYIT women’s tennis triumphed Friday afternoon, producing a 6-3 win over the University of D.C. at the NYIT Tennis Complex. It was the Bears first win as a varsity program.

The Bears won two of the three doubles matches, falling at the No. 1 spot. Catherine Porras and Amanda Szollosi defeated Aida Gueye and Clarice Melvin 8-2 at No. 3 doubles to give NYIT a 1-0 lead. The match was then tied when Alexana Gaspari and Rebecca Stein fell 8-2 at the No. 1 spot. No. 2 doubles was the last to finish and went into extra sets. Tied 7-7, Alexis Beaumont and Sarah Vivonetto fought for back-to-back game points to win 9-7 over Ty Abilla and Phantasia Nolan. NYIT led 2-1 going into singles play.

UDC quickly took a 3-2 lead with singles wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. But the Bears fought hard and won in the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 spots for the win. Stein earned her first collegiate win with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at the fourth singles spot. Szollosi also picked up her first win with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph at fifth singles and Porras tallied her second win of the season at sixth singles with a 6-4, 6-1 finish.

The icing on the cake for the Bears was the No. 3 singles match. Beaumont fought her opponent Abilla to a third set, which was played as a tie breaker due to darkness. Beaumont rallied back after losing the first set 6-1 to blank Abilla 6-0 in the second set. She won the match with a 10-7 third set tiebreaker score.

The Bears return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 28 against the neighboring Pioneers of C.W. Post. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. on the C.W. Post campus. NYIT will look to avenge their 9-0 loss to C.W. Post earlier this week.
