WEST ISLIP, N.Y. (Sept. 8, 2010) – NYIT women’s tennis opened its very first season with a hard-fought 7-2 loss against Dowling College on the campus of St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip, N.Y. The Bears' two points were in singles play from senior Alexis Beaumont and sophomore Catherine Porras.
 
Dowling took an early 1-0 lead after earning the doubles point. At first doubles, Robyn Romanoff and Cristina Hoffmann swept seniors Rebecca Stein and Sarah Vivonetto. In No. 2 doubles, senior Alexana Gaspari and Beaumont fell 8-2 to Cristina Sousa and Amber O’Malley, while senior Amanda Szollosi and Porras lost 8-3 at third doubles to Chanida Monparpunth and Michelle Di Santo.
 
In singles action, Beaumont defeated Chanida Monparpunth at No. 4 singles with straight set scores of 6-3 and 6-0. In the sixth singles match, Porrasfought to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Michelle Di Santo. Dowling won the other four singles matches for the final 7-2 score.
 
NYIT opens its home schedule on Saturday, Sept. 11 against Queens College. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at NYIT's Old Westbury campus.
