GW Women's Tennis Defeats Morgan State and Navy for 2-0 Weekend

WASHINGTON – The George Washington women’s tennis team went 2-0 this weekend, improving its record to 5-4, as the Colonials defeated Morgan State and Navy, both by 6-1 scores. GW handed Navy (11-1) its first loss of the season in convincing fashion.

Seniors Jacqueline Corba and Meg Tyner went undefeated on the weekend as they won their respective singles matches as well as their doubles match.

GW hosted Morgan State (0-4) on Saturday afternoon at the Green Spring Racquet Club in Lutherville-Timonium, Md., and the Colonials won all but one singles match. Corba led off with a 6-2, 6-0 No. 1 singles victory over Arina Alilueva, and sophomore Leah Pascarella followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the second flight over Jasmine Edwards.

Sophomore Isabella Escobar blanked Stephanie Henry, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 4 match and senior Meg Tyner held Tiffany Hughes scoreless, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 5 spot. Junior Mimi Hamling fell to Margarita Belyakova in the third flight in extra sets, 4-6, 6-1 (10-7).

In doubles action, Hamling and senior Zoe Krohn teamed up for an 8-4 victory in the No. 1 match over Alilueva and Belyakova. In the No. 2 match, Escobar and Pascarella posted an 8-0 win over Edwards and Henry.   

On Sunday afternoon, GW traveled to Annapolis, Md., to take on previously undefeated Navy. Corba won her second straight No. 1 singles match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Darien Sears and Pascarella earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 spot over Emani Decquir.

Hamling posted a No. 3 singles victory in three sets over Erin Snook by scores of 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1). In the No. 4 match, Escobar fought back to defeat Gabby Winter in a tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-4 (11-9), and at the No. 5 spot, Tyner downed Abby Shewalter, 6-0, 6-4. Krohn dropped her No. 6 match to Noelle Kaufmann, 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles play, Hamling and Krohn earned an 8-4 No. 1 victory over Decquir and Stefanie Ton. Corba and Tyner followed with an 8-2 victory in the third flight over Sears and Shewalter. Escobar and Pascarella fell to Kaufmann and Snook in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (3).

GW returns to action on Saturday, March 10 against Atlantic 10 foe Fordham. The Colonials and the Rams face off at 6:30 p.m. at the Gotham Stadium Tennis Center.
