College Tennis News - GW Women's Tennis Edged by Xavier in A-10 Opener

HARMAR, Pa. – The George Washington women’s tennis team was edged by Atlantic 10 foe Xavier, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon in its first of a two-match weekend to open conference play at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center.

The Colonials (2-3, 0-1 A-10) won two-of-three doubles matches to start the day but the Musketeers (6-3, 2-0 A-10) claimed four-of-six singles matches en route to their fourth straight victory.

Sophomore Leah Pascarella earned a second flight singles victory over Daniella Patton by set scores of 6-2, 7-5, and classmate Isabella Escobar nearly blanked Lizzie Oosterbaan, 6-0, 6-3, in the No. 5 spot.

Senior Jacqueline Corba dropped a 6-4, 6-3 No. 1 singles match to Katie Pleiman and junior Lorena Valente fell to Andrea Wolf, 0-6, 6-7 (6), 6-1, in the No. 3 spot. At No. 4, junior Mimi Hamling fell to Kally Alkire in three sets by scores of 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-4, and senior Zoe Krohn dropped a three-set match to Allyson Westling, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2.

In No. 2 doubles play, Pascarella and Escobar teamed up for an 8-3 victory over Patton and Westling, and Corba and Valente won their third flight match to Oosterbaan and Wolf by a convincing 8-1 score. Hamling and Krohn dropped the No. 1 doubles match in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (4).

GW returns to action on Sunday against host Duquesne at 11 a.m.
