Georgetown College men's and women's tennis took on another tough NCAA Division II program this past weekend when it traveled to Bellarmine University. The Tigers fared much better in their second battle of the spring season.

"A break here or there and both competitions could have a completely different outcome," said GC coach Jessica Cunningham. "We came out more like I expected and it is good to have these two strong opponents at the beginning of the season. I feel this really sets the tone for our upcoming matches and gives us a good idea of how we are playing."

The men (2-3) lost 7-2, while the women (1-4) fell 6-3.

Kaitlyn Thompson and Jacqueline Otis got a point on the board early for the women with a 9-7 win in doubles. Emily Krick and Shelby Eden were on the opposite side of that score in the No. 1 doubles slot and Natalie Hill and Lauren Yates lost 8-6.

Krick won in straight sets at the No. 1 singles spot, 6-1, 7-5. Otis battled in the third position for a 1-6, 6-2, 10-2 win.

Doubles were again very close in the men's competition. Zach Thomas and Ross Phelps won 8-6 in the third spot, while Benjamin Aspillaga and Chris Bartlett and Ben Scott and Gustavo Echeverria fell 8-5 and 8-6 respectively.

Carlos Del Valle notched the lone singles point for the Tigers in a straight-set win 6-4, 6-2. Thomas battled in the three spot, losing a tough 7-5, 6-4 match and Aspillaga won the opening set before losing 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

The women return to action hosting Shawnee State Feb. 25, but the men are off until a trip to Lindsey Wilson on Feb. 29.
