AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's tennis team will begin a three-match road trip in South Carolina this Monday, Mar. 19 against Charleston Southern at 2:00 p.m. The Minutewomen (7-5, 4-1 A-10) have won their last two matches and have not played since Mar. 4 when the team defeated Long Island at home, 6-1. After heading to Charleston Southern on Monday, UMass will take on Charlotte on Tuesday (10:00 a.m.) and the College of Charleston on Thursday (2:00 p.m.).
UMass is heading into the road trip with some momentum after taking two wins at home against Long Island (6-1) and Rhode Island (7-0) two weeks ago. The Minutewomen swept the doubles portions of each match and received strong performances at singles from Yuliana Motyl, Hazuki Onaga, Julia Comas, Sonia Bokhari, Chanel Glasper and Jessica Podlofsky.
Because of their performances during that weekend, Motyl and Onaga notched both of the Atlantic 10 Conference's weekly awards. Motyl received the A-10 Women's Tennis Performer of the Week Award after she wrapped up her most successful weekend of the spring season. She won three singles matches and three No. 1 doubles matches over the course of the three days (UMass took on Dartmouth in N.H. on Friday before the homestand). Motyl notched wins at No. 1 singles against Rhode Island and No. 2 singles against #56 Dartmouth and Long Island. Over the courseo f the weekend, the sophomore lost just 11 total games in three singles matches. She took down the #20 ranked player in the Northeast Region, Akiko Okuda, against Dartmouth by a score of 6-4, 6-3. Motyl will take a three-match singles winning streak into South Carolina.
The award for Onaga came after a very special weekend as the freshman made her first two career starts at singles where she went undefeated. She also added a win at No. 2 doubles against Long Island with partner Sonia Bokhari. Onaga and Bokhari have won three out of their last four doubles matches and have been a crucial part to the team's recent successes.
UMass' top doubles squad of Motyl and Chantal Swiszcz are currently riding a six-match winning streak and will be looking to add to it starting with Charleston Southern.
