WACO, Texas – Senior Aeriel Ellis, junior Elizabeth Begley and sophomores Lina Padegimaite and Noel Scott advanced to the round of the 32 in the singles draw Friday on day one of the ITA Texas Regional Championships at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Scott led off her day with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Sam Houston State’s Imke Jagau in the singles round of 128. She followed that effort with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Texas Tech’s Nikki Sanders in the round of 64. Scott will meet Rice’s Kimberly Anicete in the round of 32 on Saturday at 11:15 a.m.
Ellis received a first-round bye and dealt Rice’s Stephanie Nguyen a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 defeat in the round of 64. The two-time All-American will meet Texas Tech’s Rashmi Teltumbde Saturday in the round of 32 at 1 p.m. Padegimaite (pah-day-gee-MY-tay) also earned a first-round bye and opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Sam Houston State’s Sheridan Currie. The reigning Big 12 Freshman of the Year will take on Texas Tech’s Elizabeth Ullathorne on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Begley received a first-round bye and went on to defeat Texas Tech’s Sandra Dynka by a 7-5, 7-5 count in the round of 64. Begley plays third-seeded Natalie Beazant of Rice on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Ellis and Scott open doubles competition Saturday against UT Arlington’s Brooke Dennis and Elizabeth Thoms. Begley and Padegimaite open the doubles draw against UTEP’s Marie LeBlond and Anastasiya Sylenko.
