ROLLING HILLS, Calif. - The Baylor women's tennis team won in both singles and doubles action during the final day of the Jack Kramer Invitational on Sunday at the Jack Kramer Tennis Club.
In the singles title match, Ema Burgic earned a straight-set victory over second-seeded Kaitlin Ray of UCLA, 6-2, 6-1. Burgic wraps up fall with a 15-3 singles mark.
"Ema has been steadily improving all fall, and today was just a great example of how much she's grown as a player," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "She was just so focused and efficient in the way she played. We're just really proud of her, and now the key is to keep paying the price and for her to continue to improve. She still has a lot of room for development."
On the doubles side, second-seeded Burgic and Victoria Kisialeva notched an 8-3 win over Miya Jin and Claudia Razzeto of Loyola-Marymount to claim the event's doubles crown. In their first tournament together, Burgic and Kisialeva took down UCLA's Molly Fleming and Ray, 8-3, in the doubles semifinal to setup the match vs. Jin and Razzeto.
"On paper, I thought that they would be a real formidable team," Scrivano said of Burgic and Kisaleva. "You never really know until you get them on the court, and they just got better with every match they played. Today they really had to raise their level of play to beat a really hot Loyola-Marymount team. They just did a great job. I was pleased with the way they played, and they just showed me they're very capable of being an elite doubles team."
After winning their first two matches at the event, Sanford and Horter fell to Jin and Razzeto, 8-2, in the semifinals.
In singles consolation action, Kisialeva defeated April Scatliff of UC-Santa Barbara 7-5, 6-1.
"Victoria really did a good job of bouncing back today," Scrivano said. "In 24 hours, it's hard to make drastic improvements. She did a good job of getting the mindset right and focusing and doing what she could do better today."
After being knocked out of the quarterfinals, Megan Horter fell to Catherine Harrison of UCLA, 6-1, 6-1 in consolation play.
"Megan had an incredible fall," Scrivano said. "She just ran into a player that just was really hot and hit the ball extremely well. Overall, I'm really pleased with the direction Megan's game is heading, and the good thing about a loss like this is that it will motivate Megan to get back on the practice court and make the necessary adjustments she needs to make."
Baylor will be back in action as it kicks off the new year as hosts of the HEB Invitational from Jan. 18-20, 2013.
