SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco men's tennis team takes to the court for the fifth iteration of the Battle in the Bay Classic, hosting some of the nation's top competition. The Dons, in conjunction with San Francisco's historic California Tennis Club, welcome two 2012-13 top 10 teams in No. 5 Southern California and No. 8 Pepperdine, as well as a slew of other highly-ranked competitors from last season.

No. 17 California, No. 40 San Diego, No. 42 Stanford and No. 46 Boise State are joined by fellow Bay Area and West Coast Conference competitors Pacific, Saint Mary's and USF to highlight the field.

"This is really our flagship fall event and going into our fifth year, and the tournament continues to grow in both level of competitors and viewership following," USF Director of Tennis Peter Bartlett said. "This year we again have the best players and programs on the West Coast participating and we are very excited for another great weekend."

Last season USC's Eric Johnson outplayed teammate Max DeVroome in the singles final to earn the tournament crown. He also teamed with Yannick Hanfmann to finish as the doubles champion. Johnson finished the year ranked No. 85, and he and Hanfmann finished 69th in the final ITA doubles standings. Entering the 2013-14 season, the junior from San Jose, Calif., was slated No. 61 in the ITA preseason singles poll.

Along with the collegiate tennis to be played, additional pro-am and exhibition play dot the weekend's schedule for sponsors and guests of the event. Paul Goldstein, an ATP pro and highly-decorated alumnus of Stanford, highlights the exclusive tennis action that will take place over the weekend. He stands as the first player in collegiate history to lead his team to four consecutive NCAA titles, while earning All-American honors four times. Goldstein reached the singles finals at the NCAA Championships in 1998, before turning pro. In 2005, he finished as the highest-ranked player on the ATP circuit with a college degree.

"We can't thank the California Tennis Club and its leadership enough for partnering in this event, and we can't think of a better venue for such a great event," USF head coachPablo Pires de Almeida said. "We have been very fortunate to have great supporters and sponsors of the Battle in the Bay Classic, and without them we couldn't put on such a great tournament."

Play will commence Friday morning at 9 a.m., in the still to be determined doubles draw, with singles action to follow. Tennis is slated to continue throughout the weekend, with finals matches to take place Sunday, Oct. 13. Draws and results will be posted when available on usfdons.com and battleinthebayclassic.com.

Admission is free and open to the public during weekend's tennis action, and fans are encouraged to attend and support the Dons and their flagship event.
