The University of Memphis men's tennis team advanced one doubles team to the ITA Ohio Valley Regional quarterfinal round following the first day of play, Friday. The No. 18 ranked team of David O'Hare and Joe Salisbury will face the Morehead State team of Ji Hoon Heo and Jack Swindells at 8:30 a.m., Sunday, in the doubles quarterfinal.

The duo got their day off to a good start with an 8-4 win over the Kentucky team of Nils Ellefsen and Beck Pennington. They then battled to hold off the upset-minded team of Ricky Medinilla and Szymon Tatarczyk of Purdue, 8-7, to advance to the quarterfinal round.

Memphis had another team threatening to make it to the quarterfinal round, with the reunited duo of Cedric De Zutter and David O'Learycombining to win their second round match, 8-4, over the Chattanooga team of John Peacey and Luke Saunders. But the win put De Zutter and O'Leary on course to face the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the country, Tennessee's Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese, and playing that tandem on their home court was a bit more than O'Leary and De Zutter had in just their second match together since last year's NCAA tournament, falling 8-2 in the Round of 16.

Memphis also had another new doubles tandem play on Friday. Senior Johnny Grimal and freshman Jarryd Woog won their first-ever match together, 8-3, over the Eastern Kentucky team of Joao Maio and Daridge Saidi. But like O'Leary and De Zutter, the Tigers found themselves on the path of one of the tournament's top seeds, battling, but falling to the No. 2 seeded team of Tom Jomby and Kevin Lai (nationally-ranked No. 5), 8-6. Jomby and Lai would then get upset in the next round as just four of the tournament's eight seeded doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinal round.

Memphis also picked up wins in its two singles matches in first round play on Friday. Senior David O'Hare advanced to the Round of 64 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Murray State's Max McLean, and will face No. 17 seeded Pavels Grigorjevs of Chattanooga, Saturday. FreshmanJarryd Woog defeated Wright State's Ricardo Pineda, 6-0, 5-7, 6-0 to advance to a second round match against No. 17 seeded Mauricio Antun of Belmont on Saturday. The other three Tigers in the singles draw (Joe SalisburyJohnny GrimalDavid O'Leary) had first round byes and will play singles on Saturday.
