COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s tennis team will open the season this weekend at the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championship in Tulsa, Okla.
 
Senior Chris Diaz and sophomore Mikael Torpegaard are both coming off first team All-Big Ten seasons a year ago and both have been accepted into the singles main draw. Diaz was a perfect 10-0 in Big Ten matches last year and Torpegaard was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year after winning 24 singles matches.
 
Ohio State will have four players in the singles qualifier which starts on Monday, October 5. Junior Herkko Pollanan, sophomore Hugo Di Feo, junior Ralf Steinbach and freshman Martin Joyce will all compete for a spot in the main draw.
 
Steinbach and Joyce have been ranked 19th as a doubles team in the preseason ITA poll and will be in the main doubles draw which begins on Thursday, October 8. The teams of Torpegaard and Pollanen and Diaz and Di Feo will be in the doubles qualifier which also starts on October 5.
 
The singles pre-qualifier will kick off the event on Saturday.  The Buckeyes will have four representatives in that event in sophomores Matt Mendez and Riley Reist as well as freshman Charles Shewalter and Hunter Tubert.
 
Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive an automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 12-15, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
