WHAT IS HAPPENING

• Boise State is on the road to the state of Michigan where the Broncos will take on the Michigan State Spartans (8-5) on Friday at 5 p.m. (MT) Friday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility and the Michigan Wolverines (7-3) at 11 a.m. (MT) Sunday morning at the Varsity Tennis Center.

   

• Boise State was in San Diego, Calif., last weekend where they went 0-2 in duals falling 4-3 to Toledo followed by a 4-1 defeat at San Diego State in the Mountain West Conference opener. 

   

• The Broncos also competed in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship where they were led by the tandem of Pedro Platzeck and Greg Wischer who went 2-1 and reached the round of 32. The Broncos went 4-4 overall at the competition.

   

• The Broncos will wrap up four straight weeks of road trips when they travel to play at UC Irvine (March 19) next Friday followed by a MW match at UNLV on March 21 in Las Vegas.

   

• Boise State’s doubles team of Kyle Butters and Jack Heslin, The Kiwi Konnection, enter the spring semester ranked 51st nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

   

• The Boise State sophomore tandem went 6-2 as a doubles team last fall and advanced to the title match at the ITA Mountain Region Championship in Las Vegas, Nev., in October. They came within one victory of advancing to the ITA National Indoor Championship.

   

• The duo also enters the year ranked second in the ITA Mountain Region.

   

• Butters, a sophomore from Wanganui, New Zealand, enters the spring duals ranked 10th in singles for the ITA Mountain Region, while Heslin, a sophomore from Auckland, New Zealand, starts ranked 17th.

   

• This will be viewed as a rebuilding year for the Broncos men’s tennis team as Boise State features one of the youngest NCAA Division I squads in the country with no upperclassmen, seniors or juniors, playing this year.

   

• The 2017 active roster features five sophomores and three freshmen.

   

• The sophomore class includes: Kyle Butters (Wanganui, New Zealand), Jack Heslin (Auckland, New Zealand), Pedro Platzeck (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Morgan Stone(Marietta, Ga.) and Greg Wischer Grand Forks, N.D.).

   

• The freshmen class includes: Ryland McDermott (Las Vegas, Nev.), Harvey Shackleton (Hertfordshire, England) and Brian Tran (Greystanes, Australia).

   

• Lewis Roskilly, a junior from Stevenage, England, will not compete this year.

   

• Greg Patton enters his 21st season at Boise State where he has posted a 445-187 record while winning 14 conference championships in three different conferences.

   

• This is the General’s 37th season as a collegiate head coach ... Patton has put together an impressive 796-380 record, which currently ranks him first nationally for most wins by an active NCAA Division I men’s tennis coach and fourth all-time.

   

• Since returning to Boise State in 2003, Patton guided the team to four-consecutive Mountain West Tournament Championships (2012-15) during its first four seasons in the conference. He also earned Western Athletic Conference titles in four of nine seasons (2003, 2005-07), as well as a WAC regular-season championship in 2009.

   

• The 2017 Mountain West Conference Men’s Tennis Championship Tournament will be held April 28-30 at Boise State’s Appleton Tennis Center.

   

• This is the first time that the league’s championship event has been in Boise.

   

• The Broncos have won four MW titles (2012-15) in their first five years as members of the conference.
