Cats Down Red Raiders

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona women’s tennis remained undefeated in its young 2008 campaign after a 4-3 victory over Texas Tech on Friday afternoon at Robson Tennis Center.

The No. 39 Wildcats (3-0) defeated the Red Raiders (3-1) after having won the doubles point and the first three completed singles matches.

“It was a good performance from people who have been here before,” head coach Vicky Maes said. “I thought some of our players got a little tight, and that is an aspect of mental toughness that we are going to have to improve upon as the season progresses.

“But, a win is a win, and I’m happy with that. Now, we need to step it up on every single court for Sunday’s match against USD.”

UA took a 1-0 lead by capturing two of the three doubles matches. UA sophomores Natalia Toporowska and Katie Orletsky teamed to beat Janet Durham and Ingrid Ballus, 8-1, on court two. In the third position, Wildcats Jane Huh and Ariane Masschelein knocked off Simone Templeton and Leah Roberts by the same 8-1 margin. Tech narrowly escaped the doubles sweep, as Samantha van der Drift and Kelsey Garland defeated UA’s Danielle Steinberg and Claire Rietsch, 8-6.

The Wildcats took the first three singles points, as Orletsky defeated Roberts 6-1, 6-2 on court six, before Huh took down Durham, 6-3, 6-2. Next, Steinberg clinched the match with a 6-3, 7-5 win over van der Drift on court one.

With the team victory in hand, Arizona lost it’s the next three singles matches; two of which were decided in a super tiebreaker.

In the second position, Tech’s Garland defeated Rietsch 6-4, 6-1, before Templeton escaped Toprowska, 6-7, 6-4, 10-4.

The match concluded when Potgieter knocked off Masschelein, 5-7, 7-5, 10-8.

UA will look to improve to 4-0 on the season, as the Wildcats will play host to No. xx San Diego on Sunday, Feb. 3 at 10 a.m.
