The Samford women's tennis team advanced to the championship match of the Ohio Valley Conference Tennis Championships with a 4-2 win over Tennessee Tech. This is the first-ever trip to a conference championship match for the women's tennis program and a win would send the Bulldogs to the NCAA tournament.
"This was a huge win for us," Head coach Terri Sisk said. "They wanted every point and played harder than they have all season."
Samford lost to Tennessee Tech 4-3 earlier in the season.
The Bulldogs took an early 1-0 lead after winning two-of-three doubles matches. The duo of Sarah McKey and Emily White won 8-4 on court two, and Emily Nunnally and Katie Crawford clichéd the point for Samford with an 9-8 victory on court one.
Samford won four-of-five singles matches to propel it into the championship match. McKey ran her record to 10-1 in OVC play with a dominating 6-2, 6-3 victory on court four. Jen Pharr gave to Bulldogs a 3-1 lead after winning 6-2, 6-1 on court five. Trailing 4-1 in the second set on court three, White stormed back and won five straight points to seal the victory for the Bulldogs with a 6-4, 6-4 win.
Samford will play UT-Martin tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The Bulldogs beat UT-Martin 4-3 at home earlier in the year.
