Queens University of Charlotte won an NCAA Division II tennis twinbill over visiting Wingate University Saturday afternoon. The Queens men prevailed 7-2, while the Queens women picked up an 8-1 victory.
Both Wingate teams hit the road to begin first round play in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament next week. On Monday (April 18), the Wingate men visit Catawba College. On Tuesday (April 19), the Wingate women travel to Mars Hill College. Both matches are slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.
For the Wingate men (4-15 overall), senior Jacobo Uribe (Medellin, Colombia) defeated Queens senior Chris Donelan 6-2, 6-4 in number two singles. Earlier in the day, junior Mark Stern (Gainesville, Fla.) and senior Spencer Delbridge (Henderson, N.C.) defeated Queens Walter Basten and Rob Stevens 9-7 in number three doubles.
On the women's side, Wingate junior Courtney Luce (Knoxville, Tenn.) defeated Queens freshman Skye Powell 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 (super tiebreaker played in lieu of the third set). An All-SAC performer, Luce avenged a fall loss to Powell with today's victory. Powell had defeated Luce in October's ITA Regionals. Wingate is 8-12 overall entering the Food Lion SAC tournament.
