The red hot Portland women’s tennis team continued its winning ways with a 5-2 win over crosstown rival Portland State Saturday at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. The Pilots have won six straight and nine of their last ten matches.

The Pilots (11-6) secured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 before pushing through for some hard-fought singles points.

Sophomore Megan Sporndli and freshman Stefanie Doolittle cruised with straight set wins at No. 1 and No. 6, respectively. Senior Christina Feyen and junior Jenna Tanzer needed three sets to pull out victories at No. 3 and No. 4.

PSU got points from Stephanie Fuchs and Alyssa Ferry at the other two positions.

“Megan Sporndli continues to play with confidence with a decisive win at the number one position,” Portland head coach Susie Campbell-Gross said. “Megan played one of the best physical and mental matches I have seen thus far. Christie Feyen came up with a big three set win which gave us a 3-1 advantage going into the final three singles matches. Stefanie Doolittle again breezed through a straight set victory to clinch the deciding point.

"I am proud of how this team is coming together to win matches and the remainder of the season will require all of our efforts both mentally and physically to carry out the goal of a top four conference finish. I believe if we continue to put in the work and focus on the day-to-day improvement the results will continue to come. We have a few weeks to prepare and three more matches before the WCC tournament to build our confidence. This is an important time to keep everyone striving to sharpen both physical and mental skills.”

Portland will hit the road to face Sonoma State on Wednesday and UC Davis on Thursday, before concluding the season at Portland State on Wednesday, April 9. The WCC Championships are slated for April 18-20 in Moraga, Calif.
