ATHENS, Ga. --- Two-time All-SEC men’s tennis player Sadio Doumbia this week was chosen to represent the prestigious UGA Terry College of Business as a 2012-13 “Who’s Who Among American Universities and Colleges” recipient, the school has announced.
Only 14 Terry students were chosen, and will be entered into the National Who’s Who database. Three students from that pool will be awarded an H. Petus Randall III Scholarship. Doumbia will also attend the Terry College of Business Honors Day ceremony, tentatively scheduled for April 17, 2013.
“We’re really proud of Sadio,” said men’s tennis head coach Manuel Diaz. “This comes as no surprise. Sadio is a young man who exhibits such great qualities. He has a tremendous work ethic, is very conscientious and intelligent, and has success written all over him. He continues to make us proud and this is just a tribute to all of his hard work.”
Following his senior season in 2011-12, Doumbia headed to Oxford in the United Kingdom for a study abroad program with teammate Wil Spencer, where is concurrently completing an internship with the prestigious Lloyd’s of London insurance company. Doumbia will graduate from UGA and Terry College in May 2013 with bachelors of business administration degrees in risk management and insurance and finance, and a minor in mathematics.
“I have been impressed with Sadio since the day I met him,” said Kathy Cohen, Doumbia’s academic advisor in Terry College and an avid Bulldog tennis fan. “He is an outstanding student-athlete but also a special person. He has worked hard, and that work has paid off in receiving this great honor. We are very proud of him.”
Doumbia transferred to Georgia after playing two seasons at Auburn Montgomery of the NAIA, and went on to win a total of 91 collegiate matches including a 33-16 record as a senior for the NCAA quarterfinalist Bulldogs. His senior year saw him reach the NCAA singles tournament round of 32 and end with an ITA singles ranking of No. 36. He earned second team All-SEC honors in each of his two seasons at Georgia.
Academically, Doumbia earned a place on the SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll in 2011 and 2012, and was named a 2012 ITA Scholar-Athlete.
