GREENSBORO, N.C. - University of Miami freshman Clementina Riobueno has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, announced Tuesday.
Riobueno went 4-0 in singles and doubles action to help Miami advance to the ITA National Team Indoor with wins over No. 56 Hawaii, 7-0, and No. 35 Arizona State, 4-3, at the ITA Kick-Off on Jan. 25.
"It's been a great start for Clementina," Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. "She can really develop into a top player for our program. We are excited about her future here."
The Barquisimeto, Venezuela, native teamed with Melissa Bolivar in doubles, and was the only Miami pair to record a doubles win against Arizona State. The duo defeated Ebony Panoho and Joanna Smith, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles. The same tandem breezed past their Rainbow counterparts, Paulina Petriskova and Martina Kostalova, 8-1.
In singles play, Riobueno knocked off Hawaii's Kelsey Daguio, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 5 singles slot. She followed that performance up with a thrilling three-set win over ASU's Ebony Panoho, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. After trailing, 4-1, in the third set, Riobueno rallied to win the next five points, clinching Miami's 4-3 victory and stamping its ticket to Charlotteville, Va., Feb. 8-11.
Miami will play host to North Florida on Saturday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The match is set to start at 2 p.m.
