Courtesy of CTO Correspondent - Bobby Knight - The Virginia Cavaliers are the 2013 Men’s National Indoor Champions after defeating the 2012 National Indoor Champion USC Trojans 4-2.  The Cavs have now won the Indoor Title 5 times in the last 6 years.

 

Virginia came out fired up and its #2 and #3 doubles teams played their best match of the weekend.  Alex Domijan and Mitchell Frank finished 1st at #3 with an 8-4 win over Emilio Gomez and Eric Johnson and just moments later it was Justin Shane and Julen Uriguen defeating Roberto Quiroz and Max De Vroome at #2 by an 8-3 score to give Virginia the doubles point.  

 

In singles play, Virginia’s top 3 of Jarmere Jenkins, Alex Domijan, and Mitchell Frank all went up early breaks and rode those out to take the 1st set.  USC’s bottom of 3 of Yannick Hanfmann, Max De Vroome, and Eric Johnson claimed 1st sets as well.  Alex Domijan was the 1st to finish as he rolled over Emilio Gomez at #2 with a 6-3 6-2 win to extend Virginia’s lead to 2-0.  Domijan went up early breaks in both sets and was never seriously threatened.  Eric Johnson would close the gap to 2-1 as he defeated Justin Shane 7-5 6-4.  This match went back and forth with almost as many breaks as holds.   Moments later Jarmere Jenkins would put Virginia up 3-1 with a 6-2 6-4 win over Ray Sarmiento at #1 singles.  Jenkins was in control of this one from the opening serve.   Shortly thereafter Max De Vroome would finish off Ryan Shane at #5 singles with a 7-6 6-3 win to cut Virginia’s lead to 3-2.  While Yannick Hanfmann and Mac Styslinger were tied at 2 all in the 3rd set of their match at #4 singles Mitchell Frank and Roberto Quiroz were deep in the 2nd set of their match at #3 singles.  Frank took the 1st set 6-3 but Quiroz led 4-2 in the 2nd set before Frank rallied to go up 6-5.  Frank then broke Quiroz at love to seal the Virginia victory.   While this match may not have had the dramatic finish of the 2 semifinal matches on Sunday it still delivered and gave the fans their money’s worth.  

 

So that’s a wrap on the 2013 NTIs.  The focus now turns to the outdoor season and over these next 3 months we’ll see if Virginia is able to hold off USC, Ohio State, UCLA, and others to claim its 1st NCAA Outdoor Championship.   There is no doubt that they are the favorite after their performance this weekend.
