CHAPEL HILL --- No. 1 North Carolina improved to 12-1 with a pair of 7-0 victories over Winthrop and East Carolina Saturday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels dropped just one doubles match on the day, with Zoe De Bruycker, Caroline Price, Ashley Dai, Tessa Lyons and Kate Vialle winning twice in singles.
Carolina opened the morning outside against Winthrop (5-7), and the hosts took the point with wins on courts two and three. All three matches were close early, but Price and Dai pulled away for an 8-2 victory on court two. Winthrop's Yasmine Alkema and Andressa Garcia evened the point at one match all with an 8-5 victory on court one, but Whitney Kay and Kate Vialle prevailed on court three, 8-5, to clinch it.
The Tar Heels won in straight sets on all six singles courts against the Eagles, with Vialle, Kay and Price getting the first three points to seal the dual. Lyons, Dai and De Bruycker all finished soon after to complete the sweep.
UNC was even more impressive in the afternoon indoor match against East Carolina (7-3). The Tar Heels dropped just seven games in doubles, with Lyons and Laura Slater clinching the point with an 8-2 win over Dani Terpko and Dana Gray on court three.
Price continued her impressive spring with another straight-set win, as the sophomore was first off after beating Melis Tanik on court two, 6-0, 6-1.
The clinching points came quickly after Price's victory, as Lyons and Slater finished almost simultaneously on courts five and six, respectively, to secure the dual match victory. Lyons was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Gray, while Slater did not drop a game in her 6-0, 6-0 win over Abby Richmond.
De Bruycker finished next, defeating Neena Wanko, 6-2, 6-0, before Vialle won her second match of the day, 6-2, 6-0, over Terpko. Dai needed a second-set rally to complete the sweep, but the freshman won the final three games in her 6-2, 6-4 win over Yilian Zhang.
Carolina has a week off before hosting No. 24 Baylor Sunday, March 10, at 1 p.m.
