The Georgia Gwinnett men’s and women’s tennis teams will test themselves this fall against the best in the nation, including GGC’s first NCAA Division I-level competition, as head coach Chase Hodgesannounced the Grizzlies’ 2013 fall schedule Monday.

The Grizzlies’ fall events are governed by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), which represents all levels of collegiate competition, including NCAA and NAIA.

The men’s team will open the season Sep. 13-16 by traveling to Athens, Ga., for the Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of Georgia. The six-time NCAA team champion Bulldogs headline a field that will feature some of the top schools from around the region including from the Southeastern Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The GGC women’s team gets into the mix Sep. 27-29 as both Grizzly squads will be represented at the ITA Regionals in New Orleans, La. Players who advance from the regionals will be eligible for the ITA National Championships Oct. 10-13 in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Grizzlies will wrap up the fall schedule Oct. 18-20 as the men’s and women’s teams host the Grizzly Open at the GGC Tennis Facility in Lawrenceville. The Grizzlies will welcome players from many squads to their home facility for the three-day affair. The field will be announced at a later date.

“We are playing in the best events in the southeast at any level this fall,” said Grizzlies head coachChase Hodges. “Both the men’s and women’s programs have an opportunity to see the highest-caliber teams in the country. We can only get better from the fall as we feel this schedule will prepare us well for the spring season.”

All fall competition will count toward players’ individual 2013-14 season records, but not GGC team records. Both singles and doubles play will take place at each event.

“We are especially excited to start the season off at UGA in September as it will be a great challenge as well as a strong showcase for our program,” Hodges added.

The men’s squad went 11-1 in team competition during the opening 2013 spring season while the women finished 5-3 in their inaugural year.

During his career, Hodges has led five different programs to a national ranking, an ITA first.
