BOISE, Idaho (4/18/2015) - Boise State men’s tennis closed the regular season in dominating fashion sweeping Utah State 4-0 and Idaho 6-1 on Saturday. Senior Garrett Patton led Boise State going a combined 4-0 in doubles and singles in his final two matches as a Bronco at the Appleton Tennis Center. The Broncos won both doubles points and eight of nine singles matches completed on Saturday as the Blue and Orange quickly dispatched the competition.

“This is what it is all about playing hard and getting two victories to close the regular season,” said coach Greg Patton. “All these matches, all the adversity and all the ups and downs have gotten us to where we are. We are starting to put everything together and we are doing it at the right time heading into the conference championship. Do I feel confident heading into the tournament, yes I do. It is like sometimes you have to crawl across the desert to get to that luscious oasis, and we are getting closer to it.”

The sweep gives the Broncos a regular season record of 12-15 overall, while the win over Utah State improved them to 4-3 in Mountain West play. Boise State will enter next week’s conference championship tournament as the No. 5 seed and will face arch-rival and fourth-seeded Fresno State (4-3 MW) at 3 p.m. (Mountain) in Albuquerque, N.M.

Patton finished the regular season with a team-best 22-9 singles mark, went 13-2 playing No. 1 singles and undefeated in league play going 6-0.

Toby Mitchell followed Patton up going 3-0 Saturday winning both doubles contests with Patton along with a singles victory against Idaho in the night cap.

Lewis Roskilly also went 3-0 with a pair of doubles wins teamed up with Thomas Tenreiro to go with a singles victory against the Vandals. Brian Foley won both singles matches versus Utah State and Idaho finishing the day 2-0.

The day began at 10:30 a.m. when the Broncos hosted the Utah State Aggies coached by Bronco alumnus Clancy Shields. The Aggies entered the encounter ranked 62nd nationally.

Boise State claimed the doubles point against USU 2-0 following wins on courts one and two. Mitchell and Patton were the first to finish tallying a commanding 6-1 victory over Jaime Barajas and Jack Swindells at No. 2 doubles. That was followed by a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles by Roskilly and Tenreiro.

The Broncos claimed the shutout team victory over the Aggies by sweeping the first three singles matches completed to clinch the match. Patton was the first off the court winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.

Not longer after, Foley put away his opponent 6-1, 6-3 on court four to spot the Broncos a 3-0 lead and within one of clinching. Tenreiro provided the clincher with a two-set 6-4, 6-1 victory over the Aggies’ Dennis Baumgartner at No. 2 singles.

In the night cap Boise State hosted instate-rival Idaho for its “Senior Night” match. Once again the Broncos opened by claiming the team doubles point 2-0. Roskilly and Tenreiro started the momentum going in the Blue and Orange’s favor with a commanding 6-1 win on court one. Mitchell and Patton added the clinching victory 7-5 over Idaho’s Felipe Fonseca and Odon Barta on court two.

The teams played all the singles matches out with Boise State clinching the team victory before the Vandals earned their point. Mitchell started the ball rolling for the Broncos defeating Cristobal Ramos in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

Abe Hewko tallied a 6-4, 6-0 win on court six to bring Boise State within one of victory. It was fitting that the lone Bronco senior clinched the victory on Senior Night as Patton put away Barta in a tightly contested two sets 6-4, 7-6 (3).

Idaho claimed the next point with a win on court two followed by two Boise State victories via third set tiebreakers from Foley 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) on court four and Roskilly 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3) on court six.
