Tuesday, 03/12/2013

IRVING, Texas - Baylor women's tennis sophomore Ema Burgic has been named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

This is the first career honor for the Lukavac, Bosnia & Herzegovina native, who is currently 9-5 in dual-match action, while playing all of her matches at the No. 1 spot in the lineup.

Burgic went 1-1 in singles during Baylor's two matches this past week. The sophomore upset fourth-ranked Gina Suarez-Malaguti, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0(9) in BU's 5-2 loss at No. 1 North Carolina on Sunday.

She suffered a 6-1, 6-4 setback to 27th-ranked Yana Koroleva in Baylor's 4-3 loss at No. 17 Clemson on Friday.

In doubles action, Burgic ranked No. 23 alongside Victoria Kisialeva, won both of her matches last week. The duo has a 7-1 record in dual-match play, after wins over the Clemson pair of Liz Jeukeng and Tristen Dewar, 8-6, and the UNC tandem of Lauren McHale and Whitney Kay, 8-7(2).

It is Baylor's 29th Big 12 honor in the 17-year history of the Big 12 Conference. Burgic is the 15th Lady Bear to be recognized and the first since Nina Secerbegovic won the honor on April 9, 2012.

Baylor (4-10) will be back in action on Tuesday as the Lady Bears host No. 47 Virginia at 4 p.m.
