Tribe Falls at No. 21 Wake Forest

Senior Dominic Pagon claimed a straight sets win at the No. 4 singles position against the Demon Deacons.

Winston Salem, N.C. (2/7/09) - The William and Mary men's tennis team had its five-match winning streak snapped in a 6-1 setback to No. 21-ranked Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. Senior Dominic Pagon claimed the lone Tribe point of the match with a singles victory at the No. 4 positions, while he and freshman Ilja Orre also claimed a doubles win against the Demon Deacons. W&M fell to 9-3 overall, while Wake Forest improved to 4-1 on the year.

The Demon Deacons opened the match by claiming the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Pagon and Orre remained perfect in doubles competition with an 8-3 win over David Hopkins and Carlos Salmon at the No. 2 position. The Tribe tandem upped its ledger to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in dual-match competition.

Pagon continued his solid play in the singles lineup, improving to 8-3 in dual-match competition with a straight sets win at the No. 4 spot. The Kingston, Jamaica native downed Joost Vogel, 6-3, 6-3, for his ninth overall singles win of the season.

Sophomore Sebasiten Vidal lost a tight three-set match at the No. 3 position. After dropping the first set, 6-2, to Andrew Brasseaux, Vidal rallied to force a decisive third-set super tiebreaker with a 7-5 win in the second set. The tiebreaker went down to the wire, but Brasseaux was able to eek out a 10-8 victory.

W&M will continue its four-match road trip when it treks to Athens, Ga., to face two-time defending national champion and No. 3-ranked Georgia on Sunday, Feb. 8. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. start time.
