Manns grew up in Montana and North Dakota, where he played competitive tennis as a junior. He also began teaching tennis at sixteen; and now has over 35 years of playing, coaching, and teaching experience worldwide. 

While serving in the US Army, Manns won numerous singles and doubles titles in the United States and in Korea. He also won multiple titles in Germany; and played for the local "Bundesliga" team.

A member of the Professional Tennis Registry, he holds the rating of "Professional" Instructor. He has worked with many nationally and internationally ranked juniors and adults, and he participates annually as the "Visiting Tennis Pro" at the prestigious Couples "Swept Away" resort in Negril, Jamaica.

Manns owns a Digital Imaging business in San Clemente, which specializes in providing custom tile murals and backsplashes.
