His movement is fluid, his game is "sweet" and his demeanor on the court appears to be mild-mannered. But the apparent effortless play of Hicham Fathi may be somewhat deceiving. His talent and desire to win on the tennis court make him a winner and he is as competitive a player as one will find. His work ethic has produced a game that has made Hicham a winner the past two years and a force with which to be reckoned for the next two. Everything about his game is near perfection, from his serve, to his groundstrokes, to his lightning quick footwork and his ability to come through when the pressure is on. However, most of the time it is Hicham who is putting the pressure on his fellow opponents. This season things will be more of the same as Hicham is ranked nationally at #25 in singles and #10 in doubles. Last season he came out on top 20 times while only losing six singles matches. His quickness has also enabled him to become one of the nation's top doubles players as can be seen by his 20-11 doubles record. As a freshman Hicham played #2 singles most of the season and defeated many nationally-ranked players. That year he achieved a #18 ranking in the region and he has been moving up ever since. In the fall of 2000 Hicham teamed up with fellow Panther great and Morocco native Jalal Chafai to win the doubles championship at the Rolex National Tournament. Prior to his coming to Drury, Hicham was a three-time Moroccan national champion (ages 12, 14 and 18-under). Hicham is also a terrific student, currently carrying a 3.8 cumulative gpa., and is the tennis team's representative on the Drury Academic Excellence Team.
