DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 38 Duke men’s tennis team claimed a 7-0 victory over Charlotte in the first match of Wednesday’s doubleheader.
The Blue Devils swept the three doubles matches to get off to a good start on the day. At the No. 1 position, Kiril Dimitrov and Alain Michael went through the match unblemished with an 8-0 victory over Moritz Bernhoerster and Chris Huynh. David Holland and Torsten Wietoska moved up one spot in the order and claimed their first victory at No. 2 with an 8-4 victory over Michael Anders and Mirza Beciragic. Dylan Arnould and Aaron Carpenter played together for the first time in dual match play and finished the sweep of doubles with a 7-6 (12-10) tiebreaker win over Jesse Hutchinson and Charles Martin-Lecamp at the No. 3 position.
The singles lineup also featured some changes for Duke that resulted in favorable results. The Blue Devils claimed straight set victories in all six singles contests. Carpenter made his first appearance in dual match play this season and was the first to finish with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Brad Clinard. Michel played singles for the first time since Jan. 24 and earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 4 position.
Wietoska, a freshman from Leer, Germany, moved up two spots in the order to the No. 3 spot and came through with a 6-0, 6-1 victory to improve to 11-5 on the season. Holland moved up one slot to No. 5 and clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ricky Cuellar. Arnould claimed his 10th singles victory of the year with a 6-2, 6-0 win in the No. 2 slot. Dimitrov climbed up to the No. 1 position for the first time this season and improved to 6-1 in dual match play with a 6-2, 6-3 win.
The second match of the doubleheader will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. Duke will take on N.C. Central.
