Cunha, Hemmeler Advance at ITA National Indoors

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Senior Henrique Cunha and sophomore Raphael Hemmeler advanced to the quarterfinal round of the doubles draw on Thursday during the first day of competition at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y.

Cunha and Hemmeler, the 16th-ranked duo in the country, defeated Texas A&M’s Harrison Adams and Shane Vinsant, 8-2. After falling behind 2-1 early, the team was able to capture to seven consecutive games on the way to victory. Cunha and Hemmeler now own a 9-1 record for the fall and will take on Chris Camilone and David Holiner of Texas in the quarterfinals Friday.

In singles, Cunha, the fourth seeded player in the tournament, knocked off Georgia State’s Victor Valente, 7-5, 6-3. The win marks the 10th victory of the fall for the senior, who improves to a 10-2 record for the season. Cunha will face Adrien Berkowicz of Tyler Junior College in the round of 16 Friday.

The doubles quarterfinal and two rounds of singles are scheduled to be played Friday, beginning at 9 a.m.
