EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- The Eastern Illinois men's tennis squad defeated SIU-Edwardsville on Saturday evening with a 5-1 victory in singles-only play.
No doubles took place due to time constraints, while the outcome of the match was never in doubt as the Panthers won five of six singles.
Eastern improved to 2-1 on the season as
Jeff Rutherford and
Matyas Hilgert each won in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 2 Singles.
Jamie Firth, who dropped his first set at No. 4 Singles, battled back and won the next two for the match win.
Michael Sperry and
Justin Haag each downed their respective Cougar opponent at No. 5 and No. 6 in consecutive frames.
Warren Race picked up the lone Eastern loss at No. 3 action.
The Eastern men return to action next Friday and Sunday, traveling to face Saint Louis and Illinois State, respectively, while the Panther women's squad will also take on the Billikens on Friday.
