Andrea Giraldo, former student-athlete at Texas State, has been named assistant coach for the George Washington women's tennis program.

A native of Cali, Colombia, Giraldo comes to GW with a wealth of tennis knowledge and experience. She spent the past season as student assistant coach at Texas State University where she was a member of the women's tennis program from 2006-10.

"We're thrilled to have Andrea join our team of coaches," said head coach Dawn Buth. "She shares the program's values of commitment, work ethic, and sportsmanship and will be a great addition to our coaching staff."

As a team captain her senior season in 2010, Giraldo guided her team to the Southland Conference Championship semifinals for the first time in program history. As student assistant this past season, she helped the Bobcats reach the SLC semifinals for the second straight year.

Giraldo played at the top singles and doubles spot for three of her four seasons at TSU. She earned the Arthur Ashe Jr., Sports Scholar Award and was twice honored with the Oak Farm Dairy Academy Award. Giraldo was also the recipient of the Lawrence E. & Bonnie Nance Tilton Scholarship and the Jean Smith Outstanding Female Student-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship.

Giraldo played on the South American Tour - Confederacion Sudamericana de Tenis - from 2002-04 and participated in a circuit of tournaments in Europe. She represented Colombia in the Junior Federation Cup at the under-16 and under-12 age levels, and went on to compete in the Federation Cup when she was 18 and helped her country defeat No. 1 seed Puerto Rico.

A four-year Dean's List honoree, Giraldo graduated from Texas State in the spring of 2011 with bachelor's degrees in both finance and management.
