TAMPA, Fla. --- The LSU men’s tennis team only squeezed in a couple doubles matches Friday before the skies opened up, dumping rain on USF’s Varsity Tennis Courts and delaying tournament play at the USF Invitational in Tampa, Fla.

 

Before the rain hit, senior David Roberts and sophomore John Michaelis paired together to take down FAMU’s Fabrice Myrtil and Temuera Asafu-Adjaye in an exhilarating 9-7 victory.  Senior Tom Knights and sophomore Matt Zachary also picked up a victory for the tigers, defeating their FAMU foes 8-4.

 

“Our team played well today,” head coach Jeff Brown said. “I am really happy for John. After all the work he does for this team, it was great that he got to play today and pick up a victory.”

 

Tiger duo Stefan Szacinki and James Turbervill saw the court today as well, but fell to FAMU’s Salif Kante and Takura Happy, 8-4.

 

In singles, Michaelis started off strong against Myrtil before the rain suspended play. Knights, Roberts, Szacinski, Turbervill and Zachary were also on the courts when their matches were postponed by rain.

 

“This is a part of playing tennis,” Brown explained. “We need to come out strong and remember that tomorrow is new day.”

 

The tournament will resume play tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. ET. The games that were postponed will begin after tomorrow’s originally scheduled matches are completed.
