Marshall Women’s Tennis Falls 4-3 to Old Dominion

The Thundering Herd plays host to ranked opponents
 
NORFOLK, Va. – The Marshall University women’s tennis team wrapped-up its seven match road trip Saturday against the No. 55 Old Dominion University. The No. 49 Thundering Herd fell 4-3 to the Monarchs at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center.
 
Marshall fell to 7-7 overall, while Old Dominion improved to 14-3 on the season.
 
Marshall’s senior tandem of Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Karolina Soor (Lindesburg, Sweden) was the Herd’s lone doubles victory. The pair took an 8-2 decision over Margarita Spicin and Nadine Fahoum at the No. 1 position.
 
The No. 79 duo of Joanna Dobrowolska and Irina Dementyeva defeated Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) and Catherine Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) 8-5 at the No. 2 slot. The Monarchs pair of Marija Citic and Charleen Haarhoff took an 8-4 advantage over Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) and Deanna Bailey (McDonough, Ga.) at the No. 3 mark.
 
The Monarchs secured the doubles point and had 1-0 lead going into singles action.
 
Schmitt, ranked 91st, defeated Nadine Fahoum (99th) 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 slot to tie the match.
 
Playing the No. 5 mark, Keener took a straight-set victory over Dementyeva, 6-4, 6-1. Kellner defeated Citic, 7-5, 6-3, at the No. 6 to give the Herd a 3-1 lead.
 
However, the Monarchs would secure the match with victories at the number two, three and four positions.
 
Haarhoff (105th) fought for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria). Soor fell to Dobrowolska, 7-6, 6-2, at the No. 3 position. Spicin defeated Bailey, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 4 mark.
 
The Monarchs enhanced its all-time series lead over the Herd to 5-2.
 
Marshall will continue play in two weeks when the Herd plays host to No. 48 William and Mary and No. 50 Auburn. Marshall first plays William and Mary, Friday afternoon, and then faces Auburn, Sunday morning. Both matches are set to be played at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center, weather permitting.
 
Marshall stands 2-2 at home, 4-4 on the road and 1-1 at neutral sites so far this season.
