The Thundering Herd hopes to end its four-match losing streak
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The MarshallUniversity women’s tennis will begin its three-match road trip in Hawaii this week against Hawai’i Pacific University, the University of Hawai’i at Hilo, and the University of Hawai’i.
The No. 62 Thundering Herd first faces Hawai’i Pacific, Thursday, with first serve set for 4 p.m. (EST). Marshall then plays Hawai’i at Hilo, Thursday, at 8 p.m. (EST). Both matches Thursday will be played at the Central Oahu Regional Park (CORP).
The Herd and the Rainbow Wahine meet Saturday, at 10 p.m. (EST), at the UH Tennis Complex.
“We are looking forward for some consistent weather outside this week,” Marshall’s head coach John Mercer said. “We will also be playing some good teams.”
Marshall stands 7-9 overall, while the Lady Sea Warriors are 7-2 on the season. Hawai’i at Hilo is 6-3 so far this season, while Hawai’i is 7-6 on the season.
“We hope to pick up our level of play during practices this week,” Coach Mercer continued.
All three matches this week will be first time meetings between the schools.
Senior Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.), ranked 65th, leads the Herd with a 13-3 singles record at the No. 1 position. Catherine Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) follows with an 11-4 singles record on the season.
Also in singles play, Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) is 9-6, Karolina Soor (Lindesburg, Sweden) stands at 8-7, while Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) is 6-10 so far this season.
Playing the No. 4 position, Deanna Bailey (McDonough, Ga.) is 5-8. Freshman Kristina Koprcina (Split, Croatia) stands at 1-1, while Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) is 0-1 so far this season.
“We hope we can get a positive stretch to finish the regular season,” Coach Mercer added.
The Herd is 2-4 at home, 4-4 away, and 1-1 at neutral sites so far this season.
