Marshall Women’s Tennis Successful Over Hawaii Opponents

The Thundering Herd ends its four-match losing streak
 
Match one against Hawai’i Pacific
 
Waipahu, HawaiiThe MarshallUniversity women’s tennis defeated division II No. 18 Hawai’i Pacific University, 5-2, yesterday afternoon, at the CentralOahuRegionalPark. The No. 74 Thundering Herd improved to 8-9 overall, while the Lady Sea Warriors dropped to 9-4 on the season.
 
“We had a successful day of really good tennis outdoors,” Marshall’s head coach John Mercer said. “We have begun to adjust well to outdoor play.”
 
The Herd swept all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. Marshall’s pair of Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Karolina Soor (Lindesburg, Sweden) defeated Ingrid Cseh and Zora Vlckova, 8-1, at the No. 1 position.
 
The Herd’s duo of Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) and Deanna Bailey (McDonough, Ga.) took an 8-5 decision over Lauren Shin and Anastasia Ageychik at the No. 2 mark.
 
Marshall’s team of Catherine Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Kristina Koprcina (Split, Croatia) defeated Sandra Wikstrom and Aleksandr Stankovic, 8-2, at the No. 3 slot.
 
Schmitt, ranked 65th, took a straight-set victory over Vickova, 6-2, 7-5, at the No. 1 slot. Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) defeated division II 45th-ranked Nina Mihova, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0, at the No. 2 mark.
 
Soor took a straight-set victory over Tinka Mihova, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 4 position. Kellner defeated Wikstrom, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 5 slot.
 
The Lady Sea Warriors two victories were at the number three and six positions. Keener fell 7-6, 2-0 to Ageychick at the No. 3 slot. Stankovic defeated Koprcina 6-2, 5-7, 1-0, at the No. 6 mark.
 
With the victory, Marshall leads the all-time series over Hawai’i Pacific, 1-0.

Match two against Hawai’i at Hilo
 
HILO, Hawaii - Marshall remained perfect yesterday with a 7-0 decision over the University of Hawai’i at Hilo. The No. 74 Thundering Herd improved to 9-9 overall, while the Vulcans dropped to 9-4 on the season.
 
The Herd again swept all the doubles matches to secure the doubles point.
 
Schmitt and Soor defeated Eve Castaing and Christie Pagatpatan, 8-2, at the No. 1 position. Playing the No. 3 slot, Raich and Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) defeated Akimi Kifune and Karl Rodrigues, 8-7.
 
The pair of Kellner and Koprcina took an 8-7 advantage over Justine Abella and Nicole Campbell, at the No. 2 mark.
 
Marshall continued its sweep into singles action.
 
Schmitt, ranked 65th, defeated Castaing, 6-2, 7-6, at the No.1 position. Raich defeated Pagatpatan, 3-6, 7-5, 10-4, at the No. 2 mark. Soor took a straight-set decision over Campbell, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 3 slot.
 
Playing the No. 4 position, Kellner defeated Abella, 6-0, 6-2. Bailey took a straight-set victory over Kifune, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 5 slot. Lock defeated Jenna DeCleene, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 6 mark.
 
With the victory, the Herd leads the all-time series over the Vulcans, 1-0.
                                     
Hawai’i has had some good results this season against top teams,” Coach Mercer added. “We look forward to the tough match up Saturday.”
 
Marshall finishes its three-match Hawaii road trip, Saturday, at the University of Hawai’i. First-serve is set for 10 p.m. (EST), at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Wahine enters the weekend at 7-6 on the season.
 
Saturday’s match will be the first time meeting between the schools.
