The Thundering Herd finishes perfect in Hawaii
HONOLULU, Hawaii – The Marshall University women’s tennis finished its three-match road trip with a 4-3 victory over the University of Hawai’i, late yesterday evening, at the UH Tennis Complex. The No. 74 Thundering Herd improved to 10-9 overall, while the Rainbow Wahine fall to 8-9 on the season.
The Rainbow Wahine took wins at the doubles number one and two positions to secure the doubles point. Sophie Kobuch and Anja-Vanessa Peter defeated the Herd’s pair of Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Karolina Soor (Lindesburg, Sweden), 8-6, at the No. 1 mark.
Marshall’s team of Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) and Deanna Bailey (McDonough, Ga.) fell to the duo of Melinda Wong and Alyssa Nafarrete, 8-5, at the No. 2 slot.
Playing the No. 3 position, the pair of Catherine Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) took a 9-7 advantage over Ellen Linsenbolz and Aglae Van den Bergh.
The Herd battled to take four singles victories at the number one, four, five and six positions to secure the victory.
Schmitt, ranked 65th, took a straight-set victory over Linsenbolz, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 1 slot. Bailey defeated Van den Bergh, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 6 mark.
Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) fell to Kobuch, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 2 slot. Wong took a 6-3, 7-5 advantage over Keener, at the No. 3 position.
Kellner defeated Nafarrete, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, at the No. 5 slot. Playing the No. 4 position, Soor and Peter went to three sets with Soor winning, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (10-3), to secure the Herd’s victory.
With the victory, Marshall leads the all-time series with Hawai’i, 1-0.
Marshall swept all three matches in Hawaii with wins against Hawai’i Pacific and Hawai’i at Hilo, last Thursday. The Herd will play host to MiddleTennesseeState, Saturday, April 4, with first-serve set for 1 p.m. at the BrianDavidFoxTennisCenter, weather permitting.
