The Thundering Herd fresh off a perfect Hawaii road trip
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University women’s tennis team is set to host Middle Tennessee State University, Saturday, with first-serve set for 1 p.m. at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center on Marshall’s campus, weather permitting.
“It will be great to play another home match outside,” Marshall’s head coach John Mercer said.
The No. 64 Thundering Herd enters the contest with a 10-9 overall record, while the Blue Raiders stand at 8-10 on the season.
Marshall and Middle Tennessee State have met seven times in school history with the Herd winning all seven matches. Marshall took a 6-1 victory last season in Huntington.
The Herd enters the weekend off a perfect 3-0 road trip in Hawaii with victories over Hawai’i Pacific University, Hawai’i at Hilo and the University of Hawai’i, while the Blue Raiders fell 7-0 to the No. 42 Denver, last weekend.
Senior Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.), ranked 76th, continues to lead the Herd so far this season with a 16-3 singles record at the No. 1 position.
Sophomore transfer Catherine Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) has posted a 14-4 record so far this season.
Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) stands at 8-11, while Karolina Soor (Lindesburg, Sweden) is 11-7 so far this season.
Also in singles play, Deanna Bailey (McDonough, Ga.) stands at 7-8, Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) is 9-8, Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) stands at 1-1, while Kristina Koprcina (Split, Croatia) is 1-2 on the season.
In doubles action, Schmitt and Soor are 12-6, while the pair of Keener and Bailey stands at 8-6.
“We hope for an excellent crowd from the Herd fans to support the team,” Coach Mercer added.
The Herd is 2-4 at home, 7-4 away, and 1-1 at neutral sites so far this season.
