Mat Cloer enters his second season as assistant coach of the NC State men's tennis team. He was named to his position with the Wolfpack on July 5, 2012.
In his first season on head coach Jon Choboy's staff in 2012-13, Cloer helped guide the Pack to a 14-11 overall record, a trip to the second round of the NCAA tournament and a No. 35 listing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) final national rankings. State finished the season fourth overall in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play, which marked the squad's highest overall finish since the 1980 season. Cloer assisted in leading the doubles tandem of Dave Thomson and Sean Weber to the 2013 NCAA Doubles Championship, as the duo completed the season with a 19-12 overall record and a No. 25 ranking in the final ITA doubles ledger.
Prior to his time at NC State, Cloer served as an assistant coach at his alma mater Florida State from 2007-11. Throughout his tenure at Florida State, Cloer helped lead the Seminoles to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Championships Sweet Sixteen and was named the 2009-10 ITA South Region Assistant Coach of the Year. He helped recruit two top-10 recruiting classes, two All-Americans, one ACC Player of the Year and six All-ACC selections.
Cloer also served as a volunteer assistant for one season at Florida State prior to taking a full-time position.
Throughout his playing career with the Seminoles, Cloer was consistently one of the top players in the ACC. He was named the league's top player in 2003 and '04 and was a three-time All-ACC selection. He completed his collegiate career in 2005 and became the program's first ever men's singles All-American. He finished his career with 85 career wins and 69 doubles victories.
Cloer served as the head professional at the Cary Tennis Park, the annual site of the ACC Tennis Championships in 2011. He ran the day-to-day operations of the 29-court park and served as the top instructor.
A native of Brevard, N.C., Cloer was North Carolina's top-ranked junior in the 14, 16 and 18 year old age divisions and ranked in the top 10 nationally before beginning his All-American career with the Seminoles. He played in multiple international tournaments on the ATP Futures Tour from 2003-2006, with a career-best ranking of 830 in singles and 690 in doubles.
Cloer graduated from Florida State in 2006 with a degree in sports management. He is married to the former Lauren Hoffert. The couple reside in Cary with their son, Kaes, and daughter, Kamdyn.
