 Sarah Hatgas

In her 30 years as head women's tennis coach at Rhodes, Sarah Hatgas has led the Lynx women's tennis team to a 370-140 record. Her 1985, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 teams qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships, where they finished #8, #12, #19, #23, #8, and #9 in the nation, respectively.

Hatgas has also coached individual and doubles qualifiers to the NCAA Championships over the years. Her former #1 player, Nao Kinoshita, won the NCAA Division III Championship in 1995 and was runner-up in 1994. In 1997, Kinoshita captured her second NCAA Division III Singles Championship and, with partner Taylor Tarver, captured the NCAA Division III Doubles Championship as well.

Coach Hatgas also acts as the men's tennis coach, having taken over the program in 1990. Since then, the men have accumulated a 208-86 record. In 2002, the men's team finished #18 in the nation and #5 in the South Region. In addition, in the last 5 years, the team has finished in the Top-5 in a very strong SCAC Conference; prior to that, in 7 of the previous 10 years prior to 2004, the team finished in the SCAC Top-3. In the 1994-95 season, Rhodes produced its first players to be ranked in the NCAA in both singles and doubles. Players have continued to be ranked in each of the following years; most recently, #1 singles player Andy Campbell was ranked #31 in the nation in singles, and #18 in the nation in doubles with partner Duncan Howell.

A graduate of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Hatgas holds both a B.S. and M.A. in education. Formerly ranked in both Tennessee and Georgia, Hatgas is a certified USPTA teaching pro. She runs tennis camps in the summer and is very active in the Memphis tennis community. In 1997, she served as the Chair of the NCAA Tennis Committee.

During her tenure at Rhodes, Hatgas also coached the women's basketball team for twenty years. She relinquished those duties in 1997, however, to take on extra duties as an Assistant Athletic Director. In addition to that and her tennis coaching duties, Coach Hatgas is also in charge of the martial arts programs at Rhodes. She currently holds a sixth degree black belt in PaSaRyu Karate.

According to Coach Hatgas, "Rhodes is a wonderful college. Everything about its academics and athletics exemplifies what Division III stands for."

Hatgas was named both the men's and women's tennis SCAC Coach-of-the-Year for 2002. Hatgas, who has coached the women's team at Rhodes for 26 years and the men's squad for 13 years, led both programs to 2nd-place finishes at the 2002 SCAC Championships--representing the best finish by either program in its time in the SCAC. Both the men and women earned bids to the 2002 NCAA Division III Tennis Championships.
