Jeff Hammond
Jeff Hammond was named assistant coach for the SMU women's tennis team by head coach Kati Gyulai on June 25, 2012.
"I am thrilled to have Jeff here on Hilltop," Gyulai said. "He is one of the most decorated college coaches in the country. He brings to SMU a wealth of knowledge, tremendous experience and utmost professionalism - qualities that will aid us in becoming one of the top programs in the nation."
Hammond spent six years at TCU, serving as the head coach from 2007-10, after spending two seasons as an assistant (2005-06). As head coach, Hammond led the Horned Frogs to four consecutive Mountain West titles, four straight NCAA appearances and achieved top-25 team rankings each year. He was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2009 for his efforts. Hammond coached three players to All-America honors and saw several players reach the finals and semifinals in the doubles and singles NCAA indoor and outdoor championships.
As an assistant at TCU, he was tabbed the ITA Southwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year as he helped the Horned Frogs advance to the NCAA Round of 16 as a team in 2006. He had four players earn All-America honors including the 2006 ITA All-American Tournament Singles Champion.
During the 2003 and 2004 seasons, Hammond served as the volunteer assistant coach for the nationally ranked Southern California men's team. He helped guide the 2004 USC squad to a co-Pac-10 team championship and to the NCAA semifinals. The Trojans finished No. 4 in the rankings.
Hammond started his coaching career at University High in Irvine, Calif., in 2000 after serving as an assistant tennis pro at The Pointe Hilton on South Mountain in Phoenix. During his two-year stint with the boys' varsity tennis squad at University High, Hammond led his team to two California Interscholastic Federation team championships. Following the 2000 title, he was named the Orange County Register Coach of the Year.
Hammond earned his bachelor's degree in history from the University of Vermont in 1993, where he was four-year starter on the tennis team with a .694 winning percentage in singles. As a senior, he was co-captain, and in 1992, he helped lead the Catamounts to the North Atlantic Conference championship. Following graduation, he spent time playing on the United States Tennis Association Pro Circuit.
Hammond and his wife, Amy, who was the Pac-10 platform diving champion in 1994 at Arizona State, have two boys, Eric and Kevin.
