TOPSPIN: Tech coaches love Razvan’s versatility as the talented sophomore has the ability to contribute to the team anywhere in the lineup...proves to be a problem for opponents...moves around the court well...has a strong forehand, but can also hurt you with an accurate backhand...very accurate serve and can bring power when needed...very accurate with his shots and hits the cross-court backhand with ease...hits with heavy topspin...good quickness with speed enough to get to the net...strong singles player, but also a threat in doubles...height makes him an imposing figure at the net in both singles and doubles play...good communication skills and should be a leader on the team...could play in the top two singles positions, however, Tech becomes stronger with Razvan in the middle of the lineup...needs to get stronger both physically and mentally...continues to improve and play better and will become even better with more competition...the future looks bright for Razvan.
AT TECH: (
Spring 2001)(Spring 2001) - Razvan provided the Golden Eagles with some solid tennis at the No. 2 singles position...began the season on a low note, struggling to a record of 6-8 in his first 14 matches...turned things around and won 10 of his final 14 matches to end the year 16-12 in singles...claimed victories over Marko Gojanovic of Clemson and Walt Hearn of UC-Riverside...teamed up with Gernot Fischer at the No. 1 doubles position for a 16-11 record...uses his height to his advantage in doubles...proved to be hard to pass at the net. (Spring 2001) - It took Razvan awhile to get adjusted to college play, but made the transition to Division I tennis very well...as the fall progressed he continued to work hard and show improvement...he played well at the end of the fall and had a big win against Minnesota...finished the season with a 13-17 singles record and an 8-11 tally indoubles....played in the middle or lower part of the Golden Eagle lineup...was 5-15 at one time during the season before finishing the year with eight wins in his last 10 matches...was 6-1 in conference play...big wins came against Erik Karlson of Northern Arizona and Kevin Gottfried of Clemson University, both in three sets...played doubles with Piotr Wawryzniak, Luis Aguerrevere and Jorge Ascencio.
HIGH SCHOOL: Razvan had a stellar high school career and brings a lot of national and international experience to the Golden Eagles...one of the better juniors in Romania.
PERSONAL: The son of Daniela and Nicolae Ilie...birthdate is February 2, 1980...majoring in business.
