Fall 2001 — Posted a 7-4 fall singles record. Defeated Duke's Darin Goldstein, 6-3, 6-1 to capture the consolation title at the adidas Invitational. Won two rounds of prequalifying at the ITA All-American. Won a round but had to pull out of his second match due to injury at the ITA Regionals. Also participated in the Southern California Intercollegiates. Saw action in doubles playing with Tobias Clemens and Erfan Djahangiri.
2000-01 — Finished the season with a 5-3 overall singles record. Won two matches to reach the quarterfinals at the Pac-10 Invitational, falling to Stanford's Ali Ansari, 6-2, 6-1 in the final. Saw most of his action in the fall. Competed in the main draw in the Southern California Intercollegiates and ITA Regional. Also played in qualifying rounds of the All-American Tournament. Teamed with Travis Rettenmaier in doubles play in the qualifying round of the All-American Tournament.
Northwestern — Played for two seasons at Northwestern. Finished 10-12 overall and 3-5 in Big Ten during freshman year. Played No. 6 in singles and No. 3 in doubles. Team reached the Big Ten Finals during his freshman year. Highest team ranking was No. 11. Posted a 18-16 overall record and 5-5 in conference play during sophomore campaign. Played No. 5 and No 3 in singles. Was primarily used at the No. 3 spot. Played No.2 and No. 3 in doubles. Squad reached semifinals of Big Ten Tournament. Won all of his matches in the Big Ten Tournament including a win over No. 51-ranked Cris James of Purdue.
High School/Juniors — Earned all-county recognition as a freshman, sophomore and junior years. Also earned All-Metropolitan accolades during sophomore and junior campaigns. Was all-county player of the year in his sophomore and junior years. Was All-Metropolitan of the year during junior season. Compiled a 20-2 record as a freshman and was county champion and regional and state runner up. Won the county and regional champion during sophomore year and was the runner-up in the tournament while finishing with a 19-1 record during sophomore campaign. Won county, Regional and state champion was a junior while finishing the season undefeated at 18-0. Also played volleyball his senior year as an outside hitter.
Personal — Born April 25, 1979 in Oakland, CA. Full name is Derrick Bao-Long Nguyen. Parents are Tinh and Susan Tran Nguyen. Has an older brother named Richard. Selected UCLA because of the combination of its academic and athletic reputation. Enjoys tennis because it combines athleticism and hand-eye coordination. Biggest thrill in athletic career to date was playing for the Big Ten Championship for Northwestern University as a freshman. Admires Dennis Rodman for his smooth play and his tattoos. Hobbies include volleyball and weight lifting. Major is sociology.
