Bulldogs Punch Tickets to NCAA Quarterfinals
Monday, 06/10/2013

URBANA, Ill.--Georgia sophomore Lauren Herring and the doubles tandem of junior Kate Fuller and freshman Silvia Garcia advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA singles and doubles tournament Friday at the Atkins Tennis Center.

Herring, seeded sixth in the singles tournament, overwhelmed No. 14 Krista Hardebeck of Stanford, 6-0, 6-2. Herring advances to face Nebraska's Mary Weatherholt Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. Weatherholt upset third-seeeded Robin Anderson of UCLA Friday.

In doubles, top-seeded Fuller and Garcia advanced to the quarterfinals, beating Texas Tech's No. 16 team of Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo, 6-4, 7-5. The Georgia duo advances to play a familiar opponent in Alabama's Alexa Guarachi and Mary Anne Macfarlane Friday at a time not before 4pm ET. Fuller and Garcia have beaten Alabama's top doubles team twice this season.

Georgia has had three NCAA individual singles champions: Lisa Spain in 1984, Angela Lettiere in 1994 and Chelsey Gullickson in 2010. Shannan McCarthy was the runner-up in 1992. No Georgia pairing has ever won the NCAA doubles championship, but Bulldog teams have reached the finals four times, including Gullickson and Nadja Gilchrist in 2012.

As a team, Georgia (24-4) advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to No. 12 Stanford on Sunday afternoon, 4-1.
