Saverio Mennella begins his second season as the team’s volunteer assistant coach. Mennella comes to the islands after spending the past decade as a club coach in Netherlands.
 
A native of Genova, Italy, Mennella most recently was a full-time coach at Gold Star Tennis School and Festina Tennis Club, two of the largest tennis clubs in the Netherlands. He started his coaching career at the age of 18 in his native Italy, where he helped coach a girl to a No. 3 world ranking in the under-14 division.
 
By age 21, he moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands and started coaching for Gold Star and Festina.
 
As a player, he rose to No. 89 in the world in the ITF rankings three years ago in the 40-over age group. He advanced to the semifinals of the senior national championships in Holland and the quarterfinals of the Open Dutch senior championships.
 
In his younger days, Mennella once set the regional record by winning every doubles tournament he entered for two years with two different partners.
 
He and his wife, Sally, reside in Honolulu.
