Miami Men’s Tennis Closes Competition at ITA Regionals Chin and Sundberg bow out in Round of 16.
Athens, Ga… No. 79 Carl Sundberg and newcomer Waylon Chin each won matches in the Round of 32 on Saturday before bowing out in the ensuing Round of 16 to close competition for the University of Miami men’s tennis team at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Championship at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Sundberg – seeded eighth in the tournament – knocked off FAU’s Daniel Vardag, 6-4, 7-6 (4) in his first match of the day to advance to the Round of 16. Chin also defeated an FAU opponent, cruising past Georg Matschke, 6-3, 6-0, to stay alive in the tournament.
Christian Blöcker did not advance past the Round of 32, falling to FSU’s fifth-seeded and 33rd-ranked Clint Bowles, 6-0, 6-1.
In the Round of 16, Sundberg dropped a hard-fought match to a familiar opponent in Florida’s Johnny Hamui, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Chin also stumbled, as host Georgia’s 38th-ranked and seventh-seeded Javier Garrapiz claimed the 6-2, 6-4 win.
The Hurricanes return to competition this weekend at the USF Fall Invitational from Oct. 31-Nov. 1.
