OXFORD, Miss. – Ole Miss men’s tennis player Bram ten Berge has been named to the CoSIDA ESPN the Magazine National Academic All-America Men’s At-Large second team, as announced by the organization, Tuesday.

The at-large team is one of the toughest to make, because it includes student-athletes from several sports, including fencing, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.

A native of Maarssen, Netherlands, ten Berge graduated from the University of Mississippi this past May with a 3.97 grade point average in the Classics. 

Ten Berge, the 2009 Boyd McWhorter SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, becomes the fifth CoSIDA national academic honoree in Ole Miss men’s tennis history, joining former Academic All-Americans Joakim Appelqvist (2nd team – 1994), Johan Hede (1st team – 1997), Sebastien DeChaunac (1st team -1998) and Matthias Wellermann (3rd team – 2008).

On the court, ten Berge earned All-America honors for the second year in a row and helped lead the Rebels to the NCAA Elite Eight, a final national ranking of No. 4, the SEC regular season title and the SEC Tournament Championship.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.

This fall ten Berge will begin postgraduate work in Classical Studies at the University of Michigan.
