2008-09: Outlook Marianne Cicmanec (pronounced Cheech-MON-yets) will try to follow up a fantastic 2008 fall season with an equally successful 2009 spring campaign as she heads into her final year of competition as a Husker. Cicmanec has 30 combined career wins heading into her senior season as one of Nebraska’s most experienced players. During the Gopher Invitational, Nebraska’s first tournament of the 2008 fall season, Cicmanec went 4-0 in singles and 4-0 in doubles play en route to a pair of titles. Expectations are high for Cicmanec this year after her efficient 2007-08 season, when she combined to go 5-1 in limited playing time. Her play will be a key to the team’s success this season. 2007-08: Junior Cicmanec played sparingly for Nebraska as a junior in 2007-08 after competing in every match as a sophomore in 2006-07. Cicmanec went 1-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles play during the spring season to go along with a 3-1 fall singles mark, giving her a 5-1 combined record on the season. Cicmanec won the “B” Flight Consolation Singles title at the Drake Invitational, Nebraska’s first fall tournament. After losing her first match in the “B” Flight, Cicmanec rattled off three consecutive victories in the consolation bracket to take home the title. Cicmanec made the most of her opportunity during the spring season, recording a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Southeast Missouri State’s Taylor Orahood in her only dual singles match of the year. She also teamed up with Ashley Finnegan in doubles play against Central Oklahoma, winning 8-3 at the No. 3 spot. Cicmanec was named to her second Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in the fall 2007 semester, awarded to players who achieve at least a 3.0 grade-point-average during the semester. 2006-07: Sophomore Cicmanec was thrown into the mix immediately for the young Husker team in 2006-07, spending every NU match at the No. 5 singles position. After going 0-4 in the fall season, Cicmanec won three of her first five singles matches on the year before struggling to open Big 12 play. She won three of four and six of nine matches in the middle of the Husker season, and at one point had an even record of 9-9 before losing her last three completed matches to wind up with an overall record of 9-12 in the spring. Perhaps her most memorable win came in Nebraska’s last home match against Marie Caujolle of Indiana State, when she swept the match 6-4, 6-4, to help the Huskers to a 5-2 team victory and their first over a ranked opponent that season. In doubles play, Cicmanec teamed with Ashley Finnegan at the No. 3 spot, where the duo spent the entire season. The duo won three of four matches in one stretch in the middle of the season and wound up with a 6-15 record overall. Before Nebraska Cicmanec attended Hochschule Biberach during 2005-06. Previously she attended Fachoberschule Memmingen where she graduated in 2004. At Fachoberschule Memmingen, Cicmanec won the Schwabische Meisterin in 2004. Over the summer, she played for TC Biberach. Personal Cicmanec was born March 17, 1986, in Kirchdorf, Germany. Maria is the daughter of Josef and Marianne Cicmanec and has two brothers, Josef, 23, and Enrico, 9. She is an advertising and broadcasting major.
