ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Notre Dame women's tennis team opened its final regular season road trip of 2013 with a 6-1 win Saturday over Central Florida at the UCF Tennis Complex. The meeting was the first all-time between the schools.
Notre Dame (13-8) took two of three doubles decisions to claim the match's first point. The No. 60 ranked tandem of Chrissie McGaffigan and Jennifer Kellner cruised to an 8-2 victory at the first doubles court. No. 62 Julie Sabacinski and Britney Sanders turned in a similar 8-2 performance over Caroline Eberhart and Courtney Griffith at the No. 2 court to earn the doubles win for the Irish.
Quinn Gleason and Katherine White led the UCF (13-7) duo of Jenna Doerfler and Sofia Baptista 5-3 when the match was abandoned after Notre Dame clinched the doubles victory.
All five Notre Dame singles wins came in straight sets. Kellner was victorious at the No. 2 singles court, downing Doerfler 6-2, 6-3.
Gleason won her team-high 16th dual match of the season at third singles against Josephine Haraldson. The Notre Dame freshman defeated her UCF counterpart 6-1, 6-2.
McGaffigan claimed her fourth straight match at No. 4 singles, blanking Eberhart 6-2, 6-2. White added a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Baptista for the fifth Notre Dame point of the day.
Freshman Julie Vrabel won her first career singles match at the No. 6 court. Vrabel defeated Clare Mendell 6-3, 6-1 to cap the Irish scoring.
Notre Dame closes the 2013 regular season at South Florida Sunday at 11 a.m. on the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
